Researchers investigated whether radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from mobile phone base stations (MPBS) are associated with health symptoms in people living nearby. The study focused on a densely populated, hilly city in Mizoram, India, where many residents live within close range of MPBS antennas.
Study Design
- Surveyed 183 residents with high RF-EMF exposure and 126 matched reference residents.
- Participants were assessed using a questionnaire covering symptoms in four categories:
mood-energy, cognitive-sensory, inflammatory, and anatomical issues. - RF-EMF exposure levels were measured directly in participants’ homes (900–1900 MHz frequency range).
Key Findings
- Residents living closer to base stations (especially within 50 m) or with higher RF-EMF measurements (5-8 mW/m²) reported significantly more symptoms in all four health categories than those living farther away.
- Exposure level (power density) was the strongest predictor of symptom count in statistical analysis.
- Certain factors such as age, heavy daily mobile phone use (>5 h/day), and lifestyle factors (smoking, drinking) also influenced symptom reports in some cases.
- A notable result was that younger adults (under 40) with high exposure reported more inflammation-related symptoms than older adults.
Conclusion
The study highlights a positive association between RF-EMF exposure from mobile phone base stations and increased self-reported health symptoms. The authors suggest that policymakers should consider precautionary measures regarding base station placement and public exposure to RF-EMF.
